Originally settled in 1778 by Spanish colonists from the Canary Islands, the people who arrived were called Isleños and brought with them their unique language, food, culture, and history. St. Bernard parish is still home to some of these first colonist’s descendants. The parish was founded in 1807. During the War of 1812, the famous Battle of New Orleans was fought in the parish, and the battlefield is now the Chalmette National Historical Park, with a museum dedicated to education and preservation.
