Helpful Home Buyers’ Guides

St. Tammany Parish is one of the fastest growing communities in Louisiana, and residents enjoy close proximity to New Orleans while maintaining a quieter lifestyle. Located 20 miles north of New Orleans, it is well-known for its top-rated schools, safety, and low business costs. Families in communities such as Covington, Mandeville and Slidell enjoy big-city amenities with excellent transportation access for commuting, and smaller communities such as Madisonville, Folsom and Abita Springs give residents the small-town, friendly feel of a close-knit community.

ST. TAMMANY PARISH QUICK FACTS:

  • Total Area: 1,124 Sq Miles
  • Population: 246,269
  • Median Age: 39.8
  • Median Household Income: $63,686

The original residents of St. Tammany Parish and the surrounding areas were the tribes of Colapissas, Bayou Goulas, Chickasaw, Choctaw and Pensacola. French Explorer Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville was sent to colonize the area on behalf of the French, noting the area’s beautiful lakes and forests. St. Tammany became an official part of the United States in 1810, when President Madison claimed the territory to become part of Louisiana, sending William C. C. Claiborne to establish the boundaries of the “Florida Parishes.”

Communities grew up around Lake Pontchartrain in the 19th century, after ferry service began. It became more of a bedroom community parish with the completion of roads connecting New Orleans and other Greater New Orleans communities such as Metairie in the 1950’s. In 2008, Chevron moved its regional headquarters to the Covington area, creating employment opportunities and an economic boost.

St. Tammany Parish enjoys both rural and suburban communities, with a strong commitment to arts and culture. The schools are consistently among the top-rated in the state, helping make St. Tammany a sought-after parish for families. In addition to top-rated schools and a appreciation for local artists, the parish is also home to lakeside water activities, hunting, fishing, and spectacular rolling country landscapes. St. Tammany’s perfect blend of city and country make it one of the most desirable places to settle in the region.
