Tangipahoa Parish is a fast-growing parish located 57 miles outside New Orleans, with easy access to transportation via road, rail and shipping and air. Tangipahoa Parish boasts a business-friendly environment, low tax-base, and a higher elevation than some of the surrounding parishes, buffering it from some of the region’s weather hazards. Tangipahoa has strong commitment to community and culture, with libraries, excellent recreational areas, arts and sporting events. A low cost of living makes housing affordable and accessible.

TANGIPAHOA PARISH QUICK STATS:

  • Total Area: 823 Sq. Miles
  • Population: 127,115
  • Median Age: 34.7
  • Median Household Income: $43,690

First, Tangipahoa means “ear of corn” or “those who gather corn,” referring to the sub-tribe of Acolapissa. Officially established in 1869, Tangipahoa Parish is one of the few parishes in Southern Louisiana created during the Reconstruction Era. The parish was created from Livingston, St. Helena, St. Tammany, and Washington Parish territory. As business interests grew out of timber and agriculture, and later on manufacturing industries, it became inconvenient to travel to nearby parishes’ seats of government to conduct business, thus facilitating the creation of the parish.

Today, the focus on a business-friendly and family-friendly environment continues with communities such as Hammond, Ponchatoula, Kentwood, and Amite City – all ready to welcome you home.

Tangipahoa Parish offers both rural and suburban communities. The largest community, Hammond, is home to Southern Louisiana State University, and its downtown is listed on the Registry of Historic Places. Quaint and walkable, the downtown historic district offers a theater operated by the university, a regional arts center, a renowned farmer’s market, shopping, dining, and more. Recreational opportunities throughout the parish abound, including fishing, hunting, and golf. Ponchatoula is referred to as the “Strawberry Capital of the World,” and boasts fantastic antique stores, arts, and is known as a tight-knit community that watches out for each other. Throughout the parish, this same sense of community is deeply rooted in the parish’s identity. Tangipahoa Parish is an excellent place to lay down roots.
